Winter gets a late start

While December and January provided less than ample snow for the Wasatch February has started to produce. Though the snow is coming in at a couple inches per day we will take it. And that is not to say that we have not had a couple big dumps here and there.

The lack of snow has lead Keenan down a new path, a path which, apparently is in turmoil.

Janky films has been trying out some cutting edge technology that capyures the most realistic POV shots in the business, here are some of the screen shots.

The technology is still being fined tuned but to be frank after this test I doubt it will make it to market.

Winter is now underway and though it took a minute to get here there is no doubt that good things are on the way.

Here are a few photos from Justin and my journey to Hawaii. This is the beach where I learned most of my janky surfing skills. I'm proud to state that I never cut off or crashed into anyone at this particular beach. I cannot claim that for most other beaches we surfed.

So Salty Days is finally finished and can be found exclusively on the NEW JANKYfilms.com.

The Utah syndicate has been hard at work both fishing the movie and getting ready for this coming season. We don't really want to call it training but we have been on steady regimen of freestyle calisthenics and living room jibbing. Apparently it is easier to do tricks when there are bindings attached to the board, these bindings also appear work best when made out of duck tape.

In addition to our cardio work we have been adhering to a strict diet of pasta surprise, rice surprise, and milkshakes. However, there have been contentious debates as to where the best

shakes can be found. Artic Circle took the top spot early on but the recently discovered Iceberg (two blocks down the road) is drifting towards the top, though it is moving very slowly.

What kind of cream cheese is that? Son, that is rice surprise.

While it is still fall down in the valley, up in the mountains, above 9,000 ft, on north facing slopes, winter is in full swing. We recently went to a secret early season zone known only those with an internet connection and the ability to read. The mission started out with some complications as one of the drivers was not informed that parallel parking would be required but thanks to persistence and complete disregard for oncoming traffic the sixth time was the charm.

We eventually made it up the canyon and began our trek on foot. The main attraction of the zone was the rhythm section which took the better part of a day and four shovels to build... at least that was our best guess because we just brought a broom and swept it off! ZAP!

Without divulging too much let's just say there were death defying stunts that have been documented in video. Tree taps, fire gaps, and crisscrossing trains all went down, it was quite the spectacle.

Because we got to up there so early it was quite cold still and a large hazardous fire needed to be constructed immediately. The closer to the jump line the better, we are really tying to one up the bail segment from Salty Days this year so next to every feature will be placed an alternate adventure.

We are anxiously awaiting falling snow and running lifts. Look for a little preseason edit coming soon, on that same note if you know of any new Biggie remixes send them our way we are looking to start this season off right!

Fall in Salt Lake has been good; relaxing, working menial jobs, skiing on dirt with friends, and lots of editing. First and most importantly, we have officially finished Salty Days and it is now viewable on both www.jankyfilms.com and our vimeo account:

On the day of travel it JP and I teamed up as team Legacy (pronounced "Leg-gaaaa-c" --it's French) and Timmy and Hazen worked as team "Looks good, feels good." After a nice evening in Portland the "look good feel goods" weren't feeling so well and got off to a bit of a late start, necessitating that they take the boring route home. JP and I rousted ourselves at 6 AM, boasting 3 solid hours of sleep, and drove southeast in Oregon through Salem, Bend, and the desert, down into Nevada and across 80 West to Salt Lake.

JP wore this cowboy getup on the whole trip. Once in Southeast Oregon and Nevada he fit in nicely. I didn't ask any questions.

Over the 16 hour drive I learned JP is really into government conspiracy theories. He was convinced this fire resulted from secret government weapons testing. Whatever, it's Nevada.

We arrived in Salt Lake around 11 PM. A slight lack of planning left us with no place to sleep indoors. Sleeping indoors is something I learned is near and dear to JP's heart. We ended up sleeping outside our cars at the base of Big Cottonwood Canyon. Here's JP in the morning, Timmy's still napping by the rocks.

As the snow is reaching its yearly lowest level on Mt Hood the seasonal employee with any shred of sense moves on. This is precisely what separates the core Janky crew from the rest. We have not made any moves (except for ditching our prime lodging for the much more economical and crowded apartment of JP and Wes). With the smarter employees abandoning Mt Hood and moving to winter quarters; Hazen, Collin, Conner, Timmy and I have had to pick up the slack with extra shifts at the Timberline dining establishment. This leaves little time to enjoy the sliver of summer that remains here. Yet we have had a few moments of solace:

JP, a little agitated about the possibility of cougars while shooting a sunset timelapse. I figured the cougar, smelling a meat, would likely attack JP as he chugged his muscle milk. My nerves calmed, I managed to safely to stack this shot:

Janky Films gets pitted (Brah)

In the beginning of August, the residents of the Janky house that work in the CDR decided that a celebration of Lawdog's birthday at the end of August must be in order. It was decided that a weekend of surfing on the Oregon coast would be most appropriate in distracting the aging members from the inevitable grip of Father Time. Being upstanding employees armed with an east coast work ethic, we requested the weekend of the 21 - 23 off in advance, instead of just no-call-no-showing. Brilliant plan, except that it was requested by nearly half of the breakfast/lunch staff. Hopes were further diminished when Laura (bosslady) told me in person that "it's not going to happen." However, when the schedules for that week came out, lawdog, nerd, Jelly Monster, and I all had a three day weekend. That Thursday was full of "bro, it's my Friday" comments.

When Friday rolled around around we promptly left the house at 2 p.m. to start our gnarly weekend of shredding the Pacific.

Our depature was delayed by the relaization that the sun was in fact out, so all sleeves had to be removed. We also made sure to all have matching shades so that we looked totally sponced bro.

As we drew nearer to the Coast we realized, " Holy shit these trees are fuckin huge!"
Gary rolled into the parking lot of Clean Lines Surf Shop at 5p.m., so much for an early start. The guy working the rentals desk noted the hour and immediately assumed that we were snowboarders from Govy, close enough. Our late start turned out to be advantageous as the shop let us rent the boards until closing time the next day while only charging us for a days rental. We strapped our newly rented and extremely long, soft top boards (we're not beaters I swear) onto Gary and were off to Short Sands Beach.
After divvying up all of the shit to carry we walked a half a mile through the forest to the beach.

Once there we began suiting up for the fridged waters of the Pacific.
Once we all looked like shark bate, we turned our attention to the waves. They were big, up to 8 feet according to the bros at the surf shop. As we stood looking at a particularly large set roll in, we decided that, "well I guess we just go out there right?" And so we did, for about half an hour. Being the experienced surfers that we were, a combined 10 hours on boogie boarding under our belts, we decided to paddle out directly through the heart on the oncoming sets of waves. Once we finally got past the point where the huge waves were breaking directly on our heads, we were able to rest.

It was now time to figure out this surfing thing. The first step in the process was to sit up on our boards. We all perfected this fairly quickly except for Kenny, who fell repeatedly off of his board, making it impossible to make our crew look somewhat legit in the eyes of the local surfer bros.

As we began trying to catch waves we realized that after a summer of eating shit on the shred glitter of Mt. Hood, there was pretty much zero consequence if you got tossed by the waves. This inspired the confidence to go after any wave, even if it was about to break directly on top of us. Much hilarity ensued. Onlookers got to "check the base graphics" repeatedly.

By the end of our sunset session, we had all stood up on our boards (about 20 feet after the wave had broken). Dead tired, shivering, and extremely stoked, we began to turn our attention toward where to spend the night.

After asking around we determined that there was no beach patrol so, even though there were "no camping" signs everywhere, no one would actually catch us. We found a large driftwood stump already burning on the far side of the beach and set up camp, which consisted of a ground tarp and a bunch of blankets for nesting. At one point during the gathering of fagots for the fire, Lawdog noticed a "seal shaped rock" about 40 feet from our camp. Upon inspection, it was determined that this "seal shaped rock" was in fact a dead seal with no head or fins. Concerns about Slippy the seal, however, took a back seat to the concern that high tide might be joining us next to our fire. But as we ate 89 cent taco bell burritos and roasted marshmallows under the stars our concerns quickly faded.

The next day dawned bright and early with the sound of the morning surf. As the sun rose and began to heat up the sand, we realized that our dead homie Slippy was directly upwind of our campsite as pictured below.
After a morning bratworst and more than enough of Slippy's stench, it was time to hit the waves again.
But first...
We already looked like seals anyway.

Day 2 consisted of further wave slaying. The highlight of the day was when Jelly Monster and Nerd almost high fived while riding the same wave, but then just ate shit onto each others boards.

All in all our trip to the coast with minimal planning ended up a great success. We got the hang of the whole surfing thing and were able to turn into the waves slightly before getting tossed.

IF3 and the Road

During a period of rainy poopy weather we finally managed to buckle down and edit a version of Salty Days that was worthy of sending in to IF3. It's still extremely janky, but we're pumped on how it came out and hope the fact that it'll be a weekend late won't affect anything. Regardless of its tardiness, alot of progress was made on the overall film and we're now focusing on getting some promos out. Seth's is almost done and ready to be dropped like a stinky turd on the newschoolers scene; he's a robot on rails. It's annoying how he shows up at a session and gets 4 bangers in a row, smiling like an idiot.

Aside from editing, we took a trip down to Portland a bit ago and I managed to get my Holga shots from this spring and summer developed::

We were all saddened by the departure of The Cobra today. He returned to Massachusetts with the intentions of spreading the P.B.R. (peace bro revolution) to the east coast. We wish you the best of luck towards all of these admirable goals young Nicholas Noel.

Warning Signs of Eruption Prevalent, JANKYfilms Begins Drafting Escape Plans

As the power went out in the Mount Hood area from Government Camp to Welches, it was hard not to read the warning signs. In a state of tense anxiety, the JANKYfilms crew held an emergency meeting with the goal of outlining an escape plan in the case of an imminent eruption, with the headquarters in Government Camp being in extreme danger. Important items including the supercomputer used for computing complex algorithms for their edits, powerful effects software, state-of-the-art Ultra Extreme Definition cameras, and of course the $5 dolly setup now need to be relocated to a top-secret location to secure the future of JANKYfilms.

Holy shit kids! Mt. Hood has been an absolutely insane adventure for the entire Jankyfilms crew and associates. I mean, take away the daily shredventure, the constant obscure movie quotes, the mini ramp, the redikerous inside jokes, the filming days, the editing genious, the alcoholic punishing pooh suit, and the rampant fun, you'll be left with a empty space in the world that used to be Janky...

With that said, damn this place/lifestyle is fun. We here at Jankyfilms are a productive bunch and we've had a productive last week. Mt. Hood Summer Ski Camp has been hooking it right up period. This has led to many quick feature digs and a huge portion of fun session to be had by all. A definitive highlight was today's endeavor.

From my limited perspective today started with a three egg omelet and a chocolate confection that tasted quite prime indeed my friends:). The average slow house awakening and roll out to T-line ensued dumping the crew at the base of the magic mile a little before 10am. I felt slightly off. An extensive amount of energy I knew I had to control was coursing through my head and rampant excitement had to be released through today's shred/ski activities. I knew today was going to be a good one regardless of the variables.

Public park laps consisted of a fun halfpipe run, hitting jump one until too slow (summer slush son), a few early morning bangers on the double barrel downy bar, and a couple quick fun tricks on the smaller feature section before a chill ride to the end of the receding snowline. A short hike later and the mile swoops the crew back up for another.

1:00pm hit n everyone began the exodus up Palmer in order to avoid the harsh reality of the mile's 1:30 closing time. Cause fuck that we wanna ride more dammit! We had to remove 5 mins of snow and up-box and another 10 mins of snow and rainbow box before we could slay the living fuck outta M.H.S.S.C.. This small exchange of manual labor grants the entire J.F. crew access to multiple sliding features and two masterfully crafted jumps all of which provides for hours of entertainment to our easily amused lifes.

I was feelin it. The session started with a corked back 5 that felt right n set my mind at ease as to how the session was gonna go. Le skiers were getting warmed up and getting speed n safety tricks dialed. Everybody knew about everybody wanting shots today. Once that bollocks was outta the way crazyness was initiated and the fun took off. Some notable nastyness was tranny finda's first 9, willem's switch 7's, mindeezes cork-d front 5's, greg's switch 7 mute, Haze-o's cork-d 3 n 9'er was radical, and the shreddy doubles was also very sick. Of course some slams were iminent and everyone took their fair share of pain with joy.

In short, we went and had a truly great day of summer slush inspired fun, all the while enjoying each others personal stoke level. M.H.S.S.C consistently kills it with their total lack of an overblown scene and a skyrocketed level of fun. Jankyfilms has a great crew and not having fun is impossible. Mt. Hood is everyone's summer savior. Other than that I would like to thank everyone filmin', M.H.S.S.C, An Oregon Experience L.L.C., and anyone anywhere who can't ride daily because it's summer. We laugh at your frustration on the chairlift. Cheah!

GYPSY DAYS

Early June rolled around Govy with alot of rain and clouds, making us all pretty bored. Shredding on the hill was pretty dangerous and inconsistent most of the time, so we let the gypsy lifestyle embrace us.

All told we had 5 different days of gypsy set-ups and sessions over a week or two period, making for some unique features including a 5-jump backie-booter line, a stump jump, tree-spin-jump, rock-hip, gypsy alley, pole jams, flat and up rails and mini-booters of all shapes and sizes.

Janky Films Does Bungee Banshee Jib Jam

Keenan, Greg, Hazen, Wes and Tranny all participated in yesterdays Bungee Banshee rail jam at the Skyway Bar. The feature was a sketchy up flat box over a Toyota FJ Cruiser. Competition level was low and many females got real injured. Including but not limited to wolf girl.

Colorado to Hood

After the last two months of an exhausting spring in Utah Keenan, Timmy and I piled into Gary and cruised down to Leadville Colorado to spend some quality time with ol' Greg.

I wish I could say we have some pictures or video from Colorado, but we don't... it was pretty silly. The snow was not good for backcountry jumps, but we tried anyways with terrible results. Every time we landed we punched at least a foot through the top crust and into the soft layer underneath, making landing almost impossible. We also rode at A-Basin for 5 days straight in great weather. We were lucky enough to have free passes through Greg, which made the trip. The highlight of the Colorado expedition came when we went bowling one night at the local bowling alley in Leadville and found out it was the last night of the winter league. This meant that the locals were out in full force with plenty of alcohol. It was a disgusting mix of rednecks, fat rednecks, the fat rednecks' wives, who were also fat, and what the rednecks called wetbacks, the local mexicans. At the end of the night one particularly fat and drunk redneck began saying stuff to one of the mexicans, causing a huge uproar. There was suddenly a mass of people struggling to get out to the parking lot through the small entrance to try and placate both sides, but mostly just witness the best entertainment of the night. We were left standing pretty much alone in the alley, laughing and wondering if someone was going to get shanked or shot by a hunting rifle outside. When we questioned one of the employees about it, he gave us a heated and extremely racist idea of what happened. So much for Colorado.

The drive out to Mount Hood was just an endurance battle - about 24 hours in the car all told. Eastern Oregon is pretty nuts, with no trees and rolling grass hills. As we descended into the Columbia River Gorge the walls rose above us, revealing terraced cliffs covered in grass. Across the gorge was the same, but covered with hundreds of wind mills perched on top. As soon as we got onto Highway 26, the Mt Hood Highway, the countryside began to change into even more rolly hills covered with trees and every kind of vegetation. The farther south we went the more orchards and farms we saw, and the higher in elevation we climbed. We arrived in Government Camp April 28th with a light rain and no place to stay.

Arriving at the cottage. Our front door had 3'+ of snow in front of it; the guy said as he was moving out that he just couldn't keep up with the shoveling this winter.

Life in Govy is pretty good... Walker Brown came to visit, people have been sleeping on our couches, it's been sunny after the first month of rain and snow, the summer crew is slowly arriving. It's finally starting to feel like summer, and it's going to be fun.

Spring at Alta

This is going to be a long one, but with fun stuff to look at. It begins with the end: the end of the season at Alta, which turned out to be absolutely awesome. It began with a long period of high pressure, the result of which was a lot of sun, goggle tans and good times on the patio. The life was good; slower crowds, chiller vibes and a spring feeling. It really felt like this was going to be the end of the season, it was already May. Justin and Keenan began working on the famous Flagstaff step-up, and I joined them usually late because I was being pretty lazy. As the jump started taking shape it was looking big:

After 3 days of building and sessioning, we got a bunch of awesome shots and great crashes. Everything was overshadowed by our sunburns though; for some reason we thought that after an entire winter under cloud cover and 97% of our bodies hidden underneath outerwear that we could be bad-ass bros and build the jump shirt-less. While Utah is known primarily for its snow, it is also almost a desert, with incredibly strong sun during the afore-mentioned high-pressure periods. Combine that with the reflective nature of snow, and we were covered from waist to scalp with searing sunburns. I had a serious fever that night, while Keenan and Justin almost threw up because their sun poisoning was so bad. I mean everything was burned: behind the ears, the bottoms of our noses, armpits... it was bad.
At almost the same time we finally got things organized with a buddy of mine from Holderness Nate Bloomfield. Bloomie's been schooling in Denver, while taking the winter off and spending it outside of Heber City keeping it real with Henry Holdsworth and friends with some sleds. We got out there with Keenan, his buddy Tyler Smith and myself and the helmet cam and shredded some awesome trees, ripping laps. Half of the fun was driving and getting towed behind their sleds though.

Just when we thought things were coming to a close, the Wasatch threw us some f*&#ing crazy spring cycles. I had been missing pow skiing already, planning on waiting a painstaking 8 more months to ski the fluffy stuff again when this happened. It was March 20th when we'd been sessioning the step up when it started: between March 22nd and April 16th there were a total of 6 days when Alta didn't record any precipitation; it was pretty common to wake up to 12"-20" of overnight dumpage. Our season totals during that period shot from 445" to 676". 230" of pow in less than a month? All of us at the lodge were dead tired by the end of this cycle, ready to see spring again. The window of sunshine came in perfect time for the end-of-season bash at Alta called High Boy. This ridiculous party happens at the very top of a ridge overlooking the entire Little Cottonwood Canyon, above the most notorious trail High Rustler. Imagine 500 drunk and otherwise effed partiers packed on a small ridge line surrounded on 3 sides by steep faces and cliffs. The easiest side to ski, the fourth side, was facing away from the sun meaning it was a block of ice and an extreme hazard. The lift line to get up to the ridge was packed to the gills all day long, shuttling people up to 10,000 feet elevation to get drunk and mingle with the locals who spent all winter socially deprived and cooped up in lodges. Brighton/Snowbird Jibbing

Living here at Alta has a ridiculous amount of perks, but slaying a park on the regular isn't one of them. So whenever we get the chance to session some boxes and rails we jump at it. We'd done some filming, but it was mostly with bad light and conditions, so we decided to throw together a short edit of stuff we know won't be in the movie. Brighton's setups are super tight right now and with awesome flow, by far my favorite shit right now. Park City is unfortunately working on Jonesy's, so we'll have to wait for that to open back up to get some filming done and perhaps an edit. We had to reset the flat down box at Snowbird because it was almost impossible to slide with the amount of tilt it had. One of the park crew guys came by and had 0 problems with what we were doing, and was actually glad we were doing it because it had sucked for a long time. We also just set up the stall wall here at Alta with a huuuge tranny, so it should be a ridiculous session if we ever get some sunshine.

The JANKYfilms Eastcoast killers put up an edit of their shredding from the past two months and it was sick. Mt Snow looks like they're killing it pretty hard, I can't wait to see what happens there.
